Periodontal Maintenance

Dr. Gruner provides patients in Palm Beach Gardens, West Palm Beach, Jupiter and Wellington, FL with information and treatment for periodontal maintenance.

What is Periodontitis?

Periodontitis is a severe form of gum disease that can lead to other health problems such as teeth loss. This form of gum disease destroys the soft tissue and bone that support your teeth.

It is important for West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens, Jupiter and Wellington patients to practice good oral hygiene to prevent diseases such as gingivitis which can lead to periodontitis.

How does Periodontitis Occur?

Many Palm Beach Gardens patients are familiar with gingivitis (gum inflammation), and that it can be prevented with good oral care. However, many are unaware that gingivitis can lead to periodontitis.

Poor dental hygiene initially leads to plaque build up, which contains a lot of bacteria. This plaque and bacteria build up causes the gums to become inflamed, and you may notice bleeding during tooth brushing—gingivitis. At this stage, it is important to see your dentist to take preventative measures against periodontitis.

When gingivitis is left untreated, the inner layer of the gum and the bone begin to pull away from the teeth and form pockets. These small spaces collect debris which can lead to infection. The plaque will continue to spread and grow below the gum line.

The bacteria in the plaque release toxins which break down the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place. As the disease progresses eventually the teeth will no longer be anchored in place, leading to tooth loss.

Luckily for our Jupiter, West Palm Beach, Palm Beach Gardens and Wellington patients there are preventative measures against periodontitis. Daily teeth brushing and flossing are your most effective defense against gingivitis and periodontitis. For Palm Beach Gardens dental patients who are already suffering from periodontitis, Dr. Gruner provides a variety of options for treatment.
